AM Seafoods Ltd are participating in a month long voluntary closure of the queen scallop fishery areas off the West coast of England and Wales.
This came into effect at the beginning of May and was as the result of growing concerns that had been expressed by many within the industry.
As a key processor of queen scallops AM Seafoods had been worried about the impact of stock due to recent heavy fishing in these areas.
As a result of these concerns representatives from the UK and Isle of Man catching and processing sectors, including AM Seafoods, came together to discuss the fishery and the need for additional management measures.
One such recommendation from these meetings was the voluntary cessation of efforts by queen scallops vessels to coincide with the spring spawning event. Thus allowing the animals opportunity to spawn before being harvested.
