REGAIN’S Snowdonia Charity Challenge
Saturday 14th June 2014
Early morning on the 14th June, four brave warriors from AM Seafoods began the momentous task of completing the Snowdonia Charity Challenge. These intrepid warriors were Scott Merrick (Production Director), Mark Merrick (Finance Director), Kim Cox (Frozen Logistics Manager) and Tracey Geddes (Production Manager).
The first stage of the challenge was a stunning 20 mile cycle on roads and unclassified country lanes, with some steep uphill sections negotiated.
The second stage of the challenge was the daunting climb up to the top of Snowdon, Wales’ highest mountain. The Challenge organisers expected that for the quick footed this would take approximately two hours, for others up to five hours. Unfortunately for Kim this was the latter as she sustained a bad knee injury on the ascent and had to regretfully withdraw from the challenge.
Scott, Mark and Tracey descended Snowdon and then at the base climbed back on their bikes for a further 10 mile cycle to the canoe section of the Challenge.
The canoe section took place on the shores of Llyn Gwynant where the aim of the game was to canoe in open Canadian canoes around a buoy and back as quickly as possible. The fastest teams would take less than 30 minutes, the slowest teams up to 45 minutes. Considering the AM Seafoods team had been reduced to three from four they managed to achieve a great time of 31 minutes to complete this section.
After leaving the canoes they then clambered back on to their bikes for the final push towards the finish line. This wasn’t an easy task as they had a vicious climb to Pen y Gwryd up a stone strewn old coach road. Then a final steep hill and a climb to Pen y Pass and a gruelling ascent of 356 metres (1,170 feet). The pleasure then of the final zooming descent into Llanberis with the finish line in sight!
All in all a very hard day out. Our team all feel proud of the fact that they took part in the event raising money for a very worthwhile charity and showing their hard work and team effort. They are all now official Snowdonia Superstars! CONGRATULATIONS!
