Shellfish Association of Great Britain – Domoic Acid testing in Crab

Dungeness CrabNews was announced that China has stepped up inspections effectively shutting down Chinese imports of US Dungeness live crab.  This was due to levels of Domoic acid being found in the crab.

Domoic acid (DA) is a neurotaoxin that causes amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP). It is produced by algae and accumulates in shellfish, sardines, and anchovies. Exposure to the biotoxin affects the brain, causing seizures, and possible death.

The knock on effect sent shock waves through the shellfish industry at the time with concerns for exports of live crab from the UK and Europe to China.

As a member of SAGB AM Seafoods offered to assist as part of our internal laboratory testing protocols include regular test’s for Domoic Acid in King and Queen Scallops.

To assist SAGB and their ongoing work with the Chinese Authorities we have introduced an internal toxin test on Brown Crab and will be sharing the results with the group.
